Cristina Fernández Least Popular President in American Continent

Argentine President Cristina Fernández is the least popular president in the entire hemisphere, according to a recent poll of regional leaders.

The survey, organized by the Mexican consulting firm Mitofsky Consulta, puts Fernández at the bottom of the heap of 15 leaders in the Americas.

The data for Argentina were compiled by the Argentine polling firm Poliarquía, which in the last election proved itself to be the country’s most accurate pollster.

The poll puts Fernández’s approval rating at just 23%. That’s just below President Alan García of Peru, whose approval rating stands at 27%.

El Salvador’s President Mauricio Funes leads the list with an astonishing rating of 84%. He’s followed by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva at 81%.

U.S. President Barack Obama ranked 9th at 52%.

The survey didn’t conduct polls in Canada, Honduras, Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic or in Venezuela.

When the Spanish arrived in Mexico they came across the Aztecs. The Aztec language is called Nahuatl. The Aztecs had a drink which they made from a bean they called CHOCO (bitter). They would put this bean into water (ATL) to produce CHOCO-ATL (bitter water).

The TL sound is common in the Aztec language but not in Spanish. The Spaniards inserted an A between the T and L and pronounced the drink CHOCOLATE.

Ayer a las seis de la tarde abrió la nueva tienda de Apple en la Quinta Avenida. Estará abierta los siete días de la semana, las 24 horas del día.
Para la apertura, rifan una MacBook por hora durante 24 horas seguidas.

Anoche, a la una de la madrugada, fui a curiosear y a ver si ligaba una laptop. ¡Había media cuadra de cola! En media hora estaba adentro. El evento era una gran fiesta social para entusiastas de Mac, y el lugar es una verdadera belleza.

Rostros sombríos y cansados se veían llegar caminando desde diferentes direcciones, apresurándose para llegar a tiempo y poder participar en el concurso tan esperado.

En esa madrugada reinaba un conmovedor silencio, pero todos se encontraban ansiosos por demostrar sus habilidades, por interpretar esas músicas mágicas que serían oídas por los dioses de la montaña y los harían llevarse a sus hogares al cordero vivo, premio prometido por el organizador del concurso.
Así, durante toda la mañana fueron llegando al valle humildes campesinos que, tal vez sin saberlo, eran poseedores de dones invisibles y misteriosos. Artífices de sucesos difíciles de comprender.

De a uno se fueron sentando sobre la tierra reseca, acompañados de instrumentos como una flauta de caña, una suerte de guitarrita de tres cuerdas recubierta en cuero fino, o el más simple y complejo de todos los instrumentos: la voz.

Cuando el sol brilló por sobre sus cabezas anunciando el mediodía, comenzaron a pasar uno a uno a demostrar sus habilidades musicales.
Por varias horas nada extraordinario ocurrió. Por más que el virtuosismo de estos artistas era de un alto nivel, los dioses de la montaña no daban señal alguna de aprobación. El Gran Jurado Divino no había encontrado aún al merecedor del cordero. Se escucharon músicas provenientes de lejanos lugares y diversas tradiciones. Se escucharon conjuras, llantos y risas.

Al caer la tarde, ya cuando el paisaje se poblaba de sombras recortadas y colores anaranjados, uno de los participantes, un cantor de procedencia tal vez armenia o turca, comenzó a emitir unos sonidos. Y de pronto la montaña respondió, resonando indefinidamente. El eco despertado por la voz del campesino se escuchó una y otra vez en todos los valles y laderas del lugar.
El hombre se levantó, cargó al animal y se marchó. El resto de los participantes se fueron dispersando lentamente entre las sombras del atardecer.
El concurso había concluído.

Volkswagen se ha visto obligada a retirar en Estados Unidos un anuncio publicitario de su nuevo Golf GTI tras recibir quejas de la comunidad hispana por el eslogan escogido en español: "Turbo-Cojones". El anuncio, que podía verse en vallas publicitarias de Nueva York, Los Ángeles y Miami, mostraba una foto del nuevo Golf, acompañada del lema "Turbo-Cojones", en un intento de sublimar la virilidad de los conductores hispanos.

Cojones se ha convertido en un término usado por los anglohablantes de Estados Unidos con la connotación de valiente o visceral, pero para los que tienen el español como lengua materna sigue siendo una palabra malsonante. El diccionario de la Real Academia Española (RAE) define el término en sus páginas como malsonante en su primera acepción

cojón. (Del lat. colĕo). 1. m. malson. testículo. cojones. 1. interj. U. para expresar diversos estados de ánimo, especialmente extrañeza o enfado.

La palabra geek (del inglés geek - pronúnciese "guic") ha sido desde su aparición difícil de traducir al español, no hay una palabra en especial que pueda dar una idea aproximada del significado de 'geek'. Representa una idea, un estilo de vida que podría resumirse como: “Persona que entiende todo acerca de las computadoras y demás tecnología”. Su objetivo es hacer las cosas por diversión y por el reconocimiento, casi siempre por el simple placer de hacerlo.
Sin embargo es un término que suele confundirse como sinónimo de Nerd. Aunque las diferencias son muy debatidas hoy en día, al igual que un geek, un nerd es una persona con gran inteligencia y pasión por el conocimiento, así como con altas tendencias mantenerse apartado de la corriente social. Sin embargo un geek suele ser una persona más extravagante y extrovertida tanto en su estilo de vida como en su forma de ser, mientras que un nerd tiende a ser más conservador.

Jon Katz define así a los geeks en su libro Geeks: How Two Lost Boys Rode the Internet Out of Idaho.

"Miembro de la nueva elite cultural, una comunidad de insatisfechos sociales, amantes de la cultura pop y centrados en la tecnología. En los EE.UU. sólo el 9 por ciento de la población habla un segundo idioma, en contraste con Europa donde la mitad de la gente lo hace.
El español se fortalece por la ola migratoria de latinoamericanos y por una serie de programas que trabajan por su difusión.

Una resolución aprobada el año pasado por el Senado de los Estados Unidos proclamó el 2005 como “El Año del Estudio de Idiomas Extranjeros”. En la resolución se destacó que apenas un 9,3% de los estadounidenses hablan dos idiomas, comparado con 52,7% de los europeos. En enero, el gobierno del presidente George W. Bush propuso invertir más de 100 millones de dólares en programas para ampliar la enseñanza de idiomas. “Los estadounidenses están descubriendo que saber apenas un idioma les limita su comprensión del mundo”, dice King, en abierta campaña por su lengua natal.

La posibilidad de obtener la ciudadanía estadounidense para millones de indocumentados sufrió un retroceso inesperado ayer, cuando el Senado rechazó el proyecto de reforma inmigratoria que un grupo de senadores demócratas y republicanos negoció durante las últimas dos semanas.

The word mate derives from the quichua word "mati", which means glass or recipient for drinking, but it has been generalized as the common name of the fruit of the gourd plant –Lagenaria vulgaris- especially the varieties used to prepare and serve the infusion of yerba mate ("poro" and "galleta"). So, with the later proliferation of gourds made of the most varied materials, destined to prepare this infusion the word mate began to be used to refer also to any kind of container.
Then, the word mate began to name the infusion itself.

The mate circle (la ronda de mate)

This name is given to the group of mate users who share a mate in a meeting. It has its origin in the circle of the fogón (campfire) and, together with its social importance, in specific terms of the mate, it refers to the order that the brewer assigns to each member , so that he can have an fair distribution of the mate. The objective is that the person who has just drunk his mate does not drink again until each member of the circle has received his. This cycle is called circle (ronda).
Sometimes, when the meeting is very numerous, there is more than one mate in a circle, and even more than one brewer, otherwise, the waiting between one mate and the other would be too long. In this cases there is usually a sweet mate and an unsweetened one in the circle. The circle generally has this geometrical shape, but this is not a compulsory characteristic, for sometimes, circumstances such as the changing of place of any of the members, the arrival of a new one or the departure of another one, alter such shape. These circumstances test the good memory of the brewer, whose purpose is that everybody always drinks the same quantity of mates.

"If the function of brewing mate tuned to be, in other times, a worshipped destiny of a number of humble people, their empiric knowledge and their special skill to apply it, which made this modest art famous because it let them summon in the gourd all the virtues and benefits of the yerba, were gradually lost when the orbit of this habit was reduced to the strict familiar circle.
In other times, a bad brewed maté could constitute for a family the beginning of social disrepute. But then, when the habit close itself in the intimacy of the familiar circle, the deficiencies in its exercise lost all possible repercussion, and if they were not dissembled at all, the problem was to find the easiest means of correcting them. So, the special servants were no longer essential. And the art decayed. The specialists were replaced by boys or girls for whom the job was more like a punishment, and it sometimes was. In these people’s hands the brewing mate technique began to die".

Why is it said "cebar mate" (to brew a mate) and not "servir mate" (to serve mate)?

Brewing mate well requires a great knowledge and a number of special cares. In some old families only the servants specially dedicated to this matter did it. They were called "cebadoras de mate" (mate brewers). The word "cebar" gives the idea of maintaining, feeding, keeping something in a flourishing state. When we say "cebar mate" (brew a mate) we do not want to mean the act of filling the mate with hot water, but to keep that mate in always-tasteful conditions.

Gracias is the ritual word used to express that one’s desire of drinking mate has been satisfied, but at the same time it means that the mate user is grateful to the brewer.

Lunfardo

Lunfardo was a colorful, slangy argot of the Spanish language which developed at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century in the lower classes in and around Buenos Aires.

Many lunfardo expressions have entered into the popular language and have become an integral part of the Spanish spoken in Argentina and Uruguay. A few have been recognized even by the Real Academia Española. Lunfardo is frequently found in the lyrics of tangos, supplying nuances and double-entendres with overtones of sex, drugs, and the criminal underworld.

Much of lunfardo arrived with European immigrants, such as Italians, French, Portuguese, and Poles. It should be noted that Italian immigrant spoke their regional dialects and not standard Italian; other words arrived from the pampa by means of the gauchos; a small number originated in Argentina's black population.
Most sources believe that lunfardo originated in jails, as a prisoner-only argot. Circa 1900, the word lunfardo itself (originally a deformation of lombardo in several Italian dialects) was used to mean "outlaw".
Lunfardo words are inserted in the normal flow of Rioplatense Spanish sentences. Thus, a Mexican reading tango lyrics will need, at most, the translation of a discrete set of words, and not a grammar guide.

A characteristic of lunfardo is its use of wordplay, notably vesre (reversing the syllables). Thus, tango becomes gotán and café con leche (latte, café au lait) becomes feca con chele.
Lunfardo employs ingenious metaphors such as bobo ("dumb") for the heart, who "works all day long without being paid", or bufoso ("snorter") for pistol.
Finally, there are words that are derived from others in Spanish, such as the verb abarajar, which means to stop your opponent's blows with the blade of your knife and is related to the verb "barajar", which means to cut or shuffle a deck of cards.

Modern Buenos Aires Slang

Since the 1970s, it is a matter of debate whether newer additions to the slang of Buenos Aires qualify as lunfardo. Traditionalists argue that lunfardo must have a link to the argot of the old underworld, to tango lyrics, or to racetrack slang. Others maintain that the colloquial language of Buenos Aires is lunfardo—by definition.

Names given to the Spanish language

There are two main names given to the Spanish language: 'Spanish' and 'Castilian'. Linguistically speaking, 'Castilian' means 'Spanish', as it is the medieval Castilian language that spread across Spain and became the national language known virtually always as 'Spanish', in English. But in Spanish itself, the term castellano (Castilian) is often used to refer to the language, at the expense of the term español (Spanish.) It seems that awareness of the term 'Castilian' is growing in English, and even more so in French. To understand how two terms can refer to the same language, imagine that the English language was sometimes called 'English' after the historical nation whose language it is, but also sometimes 'British' after the modern state of which it is the official language. Imagine then that Britain had an empire of colonies in the Americas. How would they then refer to the language? What about the speakers of Welsh and other non-English languages spoken in Britain? This is almost exactly the situation with Spain and its historical heart, Castile (Castilla.)

Spaniards tend to call this language español (Spanish) when contrasting it to languages of other states (e.g. in a list such as francés, inglés, chino y español) but castellano (Castilian) when contrasting it with other regional languages of Spain (e.g. gallego, vasco, catalán/valenciano y castellano, as in the Spanish Constitution of 1978).
The official Real Academia Española used castellano from the 18th century, but from 1923 its dictionary and grammar are de la lengua española. However, the Academy's use of one term or the other should not be taken to be a condemnation of the other.

The term castellano is occasionally used to imply more of a standard form than español does. For example, if someone mispronounces a word, they might be told ¡hable castellano!, i.e. 'Speak Castilian!', 'Speak properly!'. However, this nuance is not to be exaggerated, as it is perfectly possible that the term español or even cristiano ('Christian') could be used instead. Moreover, the term castellano is also commonly and correctly used to refer to dialects of Spanish that deviate dramatically from the standard.

In practice, the use of one term or the other tends to be a matter of local customs, rather than deep philosophical, sociological and political thought on the individual level. Some constitutions avoid the issue by talking about "the national language."

Spanish is often referred to in educated circles as the 'Language of Cervantes' or lengua de Cervantes, in reference to the writer Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, and in analogy with the expressions language of Shakespeare (English), language of Goethe (German), language of Dante (Italian), language of Camões (Portuguese), and the like.

El término proviene de connus (concha, en latín).

La doble n derivó hacia la ñ y la u hacia la o como un cambio habitual (véase por ejemplo: modus, lupus, que evolucionaron a modo, lobo).

Incluso el apelativo de concha es usado, como ocurre en Argentina.

Pero, ¿por qué la concha? La respuesta la encontramos en la mitología clásica. La diosa Venus nace de las espumas del mar y se la representa sobre una gran concha, como en el caso de El nacimiento de Venus, pintado en 1485 por Botticelli.

España: Dicen que los inmigrantes deben aprender español

Belén Suárez da clases de español para inmigrantes en la Asamblea Local de la Cruz Roja en la localidad española de Medina del Campo. Profesora de inglés, francés y español para extranjeros, recoge un reclamo que se va generalizando entre los españoles: los inmigrantes deben saber hablar castellano.

Suárez indicó que sus alumnos son principalmente de Bulgaria, Marruecos y China, y que suelen iniciar sus clases con un “nivel cero”. La especialista consideró “primordial” que los inmigrantes hablen español, porque sin él la adaptación es casi imposible.
